Since 2017, we have been organizing The Canoe Trip here and have built up a wealth of experience over the years. It is – in our humble opinion – the most beautiful canoeing area in Europe.

Period

The Canoe Trip will take place in 2025 from mid-May to mid-September. The start dates of the trip depend on the choice of transport and travel duration.

The base price for this trip starts at
€275 per person for a week trip

Food

During the booking, ye can choose a Survival Foodpack. There be a standard version with meat and a vegetarian version. With this, ye can easily prepare nutritious meals during yer canoe trip. The foodpack contains 3 main meals per day and snacks. Ye can find an example of last year's foodpack here.

We'll also provide ye with a Trangia cooking set to whip up yer meals. This set includes:

  • 2 cooking pots
  • 1 pan
  • 1 handle
  • 1 bottle of spirits
Where be I sleepin'?

During the canoe trip, ye'll sleep in spots right in the heart of nature. Each day, ye can choose the most beautiful camping spot, whether it be on a private little island or hidden away in the woods, wild camping be allowed in Sweden, after all.

In the Canoe Trip app, ye'll find all the shelters where ye can enjoy a campfire and meet fellow travelers. There'll always be a dry toilet nearby as well.

On the last night of yer journey, ye'll sleep at the basecamp, where ye have access to a toilet and a warm shower.

Need camping gear? Ye can easily rent it through us! Ye'll get 1 tent for every 2 people, along with 2 sleeping bags, 2 liners, and 2 mats.

Materials & packing list

All the canoe gear you'll need for the journey will be provided by us. Curious about what you should bring along? We've put together a packing list that includes all the must-haves for your adventure.

It's important that you don't bring too much baggage since everything needs to fit in the canoe. The less you bring, the easier both paddling and land transport will be. A weight of up to 20kg per person is ideal!

Keep in mind about €370 in toll costs for the trip to Sweden. Fuel costs depend on your car model.

For whom is this adventure?

Everyone who’s up for a good dose of adventure is welcome on The Canoe Trip.

The average age of our travelers in 2023 was 29 years, with most being in their twenties (60%). Couples of all ages, groups of friends, and colleagues book this canoe holiday every year! In the last edition, participants mainly came from the Netherlands & Belgium.

Generally, folks sign up in groups of 2 or 4: a mix of friends and couples.

Can me dog come along?

We love animals! So your dog is more than welcome to join us on this canoe trip. You don't need to notify us in advance. Just keep in mind that your dog can only come along if you're traveling with your own transport. Dogs are not allowed on the bus or airplane.

At the campsite and in nature, your dog must always remain on a leash.

We also highly recommend bringing a life jacket for your dog, as we only have life jackets for humans available.

Keep in mind that dogs are not allowed in rented camping gear. We ask that you bring your own camping equipment if you're coming with your dog.

What if I can't go on my booked trip anymore?

Do ye want to be fully covered 'til the moment of departure? Then choose our regular cancellation insurance (€ 59) when ye be bookin'.

Did ye book early and get our Superflex booking conditions for free? Then ye can change or cancel yer booking for free 'til April 1, 2024 without needin' to give a reason.

Where can I park?

A parking spot at the base camp is included in the price. However, parking space is limited, so try to carpool as much as possible. That way, we can contribute a bit to a cleaner planet. ?

What time can I check in and check out?

Are ye comin' by yer own transport? Then the briefing starts at 9 o'clock in the mornin'. Ye'll head straight onto the water after the briefing, so ye can enjoy a full day o' paddlin'.

Make sure ye arrive on time fer the briefing. It's possible to sleep at the basecamp the night before, if ye fancy.

Can we participate with an odd number?

The Canoe Trip can only be booked with an even number of people. The reason for this is that our canoes are specially designed for two people. If you're in an odd group, you can always put out a call for an extra travel buddy in our Canoe Tripper Facebook Group. There might be someone who wants to join you all.

Is this canoe holiday a group trip or a solo adventure?

During our canoe holiday, ye be completely free to chart yer own course. Ye don't have to consider anything or anyone and navigate yerself using the map we provide ye.
Ye'll also receive a sample route with tips for places to spend the night each evening. Ye're not obligated to follow this route and can also wild camp in other spots.

At the base camp, there be a ranger always on duty, ready to help with questions or in case of an emergency.

Is there signal on the water?

In almost the entire area, ye can simply get signal with yer phone. So ye can always reach the rangers in case of an emergency or just call home occasionally. But be sure to bring a good power bank, for ye won't have access to power to charge yer phone during yer trip.

Can I fish?

Fishing is allowed throughout the region with a fishing license. You can buy a license here. With this license, ye can fish in all the lakes; without it, ye ain't allowed to cast yer line. At our basecamp, ye can also purchase a fishing license upon arrival for 200 SEK or 20 euros. Ye can also rent fishing gear here.

What should I do in case of an emergency?

In case of a medical problem or any emergency, ye can always contact the ranger on site. In the app, ye'll find an SOS button that will alert the ranger. For life-threatening situations, we recommend callin' 112.

The ranger will either come to ye to offer help or send a medical service your way.

When ye book, ye can choose to add travel insurance to yer booking. This way, ye won’t have to worry if somethin' happens during yer travels. Ye can find the exact terms of the insurance here.

How be the sanitation facilities?

Showers and toilets are only available on the arrival day and the last night of The Canoe Trip at the basecamp.

During The Canoe Trip, nature is your bathroom. You'll get a small bottle of eco-friendly biodegradable soap from us. Be sure to bring some extra along, so we keep nature intact.

At the shelters, there's always a dry toilet available for you to use.

Do I have to pay right after registering?

We ask for a deposit of 30% of the total trip amount to be made within 5 days after registration. The remaining amount must be paid no later than 30 days before departure.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

For the rental of the equipment (canoe, cooking set, etc.), we ask for a deposit of €200 per canoe. If you return everything as you received it, the deposit will be refunded within 15 working days after the end of the trip.

Can I do The Canoe Trip by meself?

It be not possible to book this trip alone for safety reasons. Moreover, our canoes be specially designed for two people. There be bound to be someone who wants to embark on this adventure with ye!

When does the bus depart and how long is the ride?

If ye booked a trip with an arrival date on Saturday, the bus sets sail on Friday at 11 AM from Brussels and 3 PM from Utrecht. The return from our basecamp to home be on Saturday evening. The bus arrives on Sunday in the late afternoon or evening.

If ye booked a trip with an arrival date on Wednesday, the bus departs already on Tuesday at 11 AM from Brussels and 3 PM from Utrecht. The return from our basecamp to home be on Wednesday evening. The bus arrives on Thursday in the late afternoon or evening.

The bus ride to our basecamps takes about 20-22 hours (from Brussels), including breaks. The exact travel time, of course, depends on the pick-up point, the weather, and traffic along the way.

How do I get drinking water?

In Värmland, the water from the lakes ain't drinkable everywhere. Ye can always boil the water with yer cooking set before fillin' up yer bottle. Doubtin'? Bring some water purification tablets for extra safety.
